The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is an island in the Indian Ocean about 28km off the southeastern coast of India spanning over an area of 65,610 sq km.
The country's commercial capital is Colombo whilst its other main cities include Kandy, Galle and Jaffna.
The population currently stands at 21.3 million with an annual growth rate of 0.9%. Sri Lanka's ethnic composition is diverse with Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim people whilst the main religions in practice include Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Christianity.
Education is a mandatory requirement till the age of 14 here, which helps the country to have one of the highest literacy rates in the region of 91%. Life expectancy is high at over 73 yrs with a total work force of 8.1 million.
